EXHIBITION: Sappers and the Somme

June 25, 2016 - April 17, 2017

Now extended until 17 April 2017! This exhibition will commemorate the contribution of the Royal Engineers in supporting the Army at the Battle of the Somme. Their actions included tunnelling into enemy territory, surveying the area to reflect a constantly changing battlefield and using experimental technologies like flamethrowers (to name but a few). The Royal Engineers were key to the Army’s efforts at the Somme.

This summer marks a hundred years since the battle of the Somme. A series of collages inspired by and created from original Thomson ‘Commando’ comics by Turner Prize nominee David Mach RA. The Mechanicals

The Mechanicals is a collaborative project between Science Projects Ltd and the Cabaret Mechanical Theatre, famous for its collection of beautiful, humorous hand-made automata. It is an exhibition of two parts. Hand-crafted automata are displayed alongside hands-on exhibits that show the basic mechanisms involved in making the automata work, simplifying the principles behind drives, pulleys, ratchets and levers. The exhibition is accompanies by family friendly activities, creating simple machines inspired by the Mechanicals. Exhibition entry is included in general admission.
