Half-term Activities – Chinese Year of The Dog

February 13, 2018 @ 10:30 am - February 18, 2018 @ 3:30 pm

£2.00

Join us as we run a host of children’s activities, celebrating Chinese New Year, The Year of the Dog, and Royal Engineer Charles Gordon’s close connection with China.

Time Drop-in:  10:30am – 1pm and 1.30pm- 3:30pm

Tuesday 13th February: Dragons At The Ready
Chinese dragons traditionally symbolise power, strength, and good luck. The Emperor of China presented Gordon with a beautiful blue silk jacket with a gold dragon embroidered on it. Get creative and decorate your own jacket shaped trinket box, using metallic pens and stickers.

Wednesday 14th February: Chinese Patterns and Prints
On display in the Museum are a collection of beautiful Chinese silks. Using inspiration from their patterns and prints, turn a fabric shoulder bag into a work of art.

Thursday 15th February: Woof Woof Year Of The Dog

Did you know, the Museum mascot is Snob the Dog – inspired by a dog rescued by Royal Engineers and brought back to Gillingham in the Crimean War?  The original Snob is on display in the Museum.  Taking inspiration from Snob, you can make your own non-sew sock dog to use as a companion.

Friday 16th, Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th: February: Chinese Chao Guan Hat
Gordon was awarded beautiful gifts of clothes and hats which showed his status as a high ranking official. Create your own Chinese Official’s formal winter Chao Guan hat just like Gordon’s, covered with red tassels, feathers and topped with gem stones.

£2.00 per child per activity in addition to standard admission rates
